A note on the support tab:
Short Version:
Cummins made two versions of the elbow, one with a support tab and one without. We based out aftermarket design on the one without the tab. In many cases the tab is not needed. The dry version is much lighter during operation as it holds about 75% less water. Unless a decent length of hose is “hanging” on the elbow, or supported only by the elbow, typically the support tab is not required. The Full Story:
Cummins made two versions of this elbow, one with a support tab and another without. As it happens, we had required a small surplus of the version without the tab, which we had offered on our website for several years until we sold out. Seeing the steady need for a mixer for the QSM11 we based our first aftermarket “wet” elbow on what we had on hand, which was the version without the support tab. We have sold a lot of OEM, and SMX aftermarket QSM11 Elbows without the tab, and they work fine in most cases. The DRY version is much lighter. Since it holds substantially less water, the weight of the elbow during operation is significantly reduced. That said, if your exhaust design incorporates a decent length of hose supported only by the elbow on the one end, this can put more weight on the elbow. You can mitigate this by making a support for the hose, or strapping the hose from above; Tony has an article about this on “Tony’s Tips” Click Here We have had a few customers that felt they must have the support. We have developed a design for the dry version below. We can add this support upon request for an additional fee.
