Before you tear down the after coolers and heat exchangers, try flushing the system with Barnacle Buster.

It evened out both of my engine temperatures and lowered the high one.Ā

Get a 5 gallon bucket for each engine with the Sea Flush adapter for your strainer.Ā

The stuff works and don’t worry about the Zincs. It only attacks organic material. Doesn’t nothing to zincs.

Yes, you can use Barnacle Buster. It does help clear the cooling passages from marine growth. I have used it twice now and seen temps lowered on intake manifold and head cooling. Good for a/c and gen set. But, like mentioned above, it does not address corrosion around the sealing o-rings. I use it once a year and disassemble and rebuild every 4 years in SoCal. 85-100 hrs a year.

That is a slick set up. Well done.

Did you plumb a permanent adapter to hook a garden hose too?

Through a tee on the intake side of the raw water strainer (blue valve in picture attached) that is connected to a distribution manifold that both engines, air con, live well pumps, wash down pumps and the generator are fed through a water hookup on deck, I can flush all with the garden hose or the onboard freshwater supply with one hookup.

I guess you could just “T” into the raw water side after the seacock and close the seacock to flush?

Thanks for the replies. I have never had the exchanger off and I’m sure the previous owner didn’t service it.

Being 13 yrs old, I think it’s time to pull it. Generator has 290 hours on it.

I replaced the impeller when I bought the bought a few years ago.

Seems really strange to build this model generator without a replaceable anode? I’ll post some pics when I get it removed and apart.

The manual says there is no replaceable zinc.

How does the heat exchanger not corrode without a zinc?

Sea Trial went real well. After having both props balanced and the starboard driveline essentially replaced, the boat runs noticeably smoother with less vibration. Overall I am pleased that my Tiara is back on the water running great. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Most were spot on!

BIG THANK YOU goes out to Tony for the suggestion to have the clutch plates inspected. Ā After having the gearbox inspected, the ZF service center found burnt and warped clutch plates along with noticeable end play on the output shaft. Ā The most prudent and economical choice was to replace the older ZF80A with a newer ZF85A. They are going to replace the torsion coupler as well as it showed signs of play.

Both props and shaft were refurbished at Wilminton in Long Beach, CA. Ā A new strut was ordered from Tiara. It had to be made at the foundry as no struts were in stock.Ā

Hope to splash the boat in about 2 weeks.Ā

Great resource here for boat owners!

Markel has been good so far. Very quick to respond and answer back emails. Ā Their claims adjuster has asked to see all areas of damage to be photographed and measured to show a need for repair or replacement. Ā Sometimes it seems extreme, but they are not going to pay for anything that wasn’t damaged. Ā I guess you can’t blame them.

Thanks Tony. I passed the info along to Steve at the Dana Point Shipyard. I asked him to inspect the clutch plates for damage.

Yes, Rob. Markel American is the insurance company. Hopefully back in the water soon. Going to have to wait a few weeks for the strut to be cast at the foundry.

The job was fairly easy after realizing the best suction hose access to the bottom of the gear case is through the filter hole. Ā The gears get in the way trying to snake the hose down the dipstick hole.

    Thank again.

    Rob,

Thanks for the suggestions. Ā The manual says 5.5 qt. capacity. Is this how much I can expect to be able to

remove? Ā Is there a recommended brand ATF? Valvoline Ok?

Before getting carried away, try replacing the ignition rectifier behind the helm station. Ā No guarantees, but a cheap part to replace known to create odd starting issues. Ā I had odd ignition issues on a 2006 QSB 5.9 that were solved when I replaced the rectifier and verified the connections were good.
