March 10, 2023 at 12:21 pm Background: Port engine currently has 959 hours on it. Approximately, 173 hour ago @ 780 hrs (1.5 seasons) my port exhaust manifold failed causing an overheat condition. (never got an alarm but the code was there).Ā The end result was having to have the head milled 17/1000ths (it was during covid and replacements parts were not available) and replacement of the heat exchanger (used part with similar hours…best available at the time).Ā Sinc…

Loss of Power

July 29, 2018 at 3:15 pm I have 2008 5.9 QSBs (425hp) with approx 650 hrs and the port engine just developed an issue. So here’s the situation: Day -7: Rough trip back to the dock in rough/choppy bay but everything seems ok (seat of the pants assessment but I wasn’t looking for an issue). Day -1: 1 hr run to marina and noticed that both engines seemed to be ‘off’ (boat not traveling at usual speed at usual RPMs and GPH slightly elevated) but ca…

Oman MDKBL-5791480 Heat Exchanger
This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 6 years ago
December 9, 2017 at 9:00 am Need a little advice… I have the Onan MDKBL-5791480 with 920 hrs (in 2008 boat powered by QSBs with 600 hrs) and I removed the heat exchanger to get at bits of impeller that have broken free over the years. Now that I have it out should I just pressure test it, paint and reinstall if all is ok or should I just replace it with a new one? What’s the life span of these anyway? TIA Jeff

Oil Leak – QSB 5.9 – Front
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 years ago
November 18, 2017 at 4:04 pm I have a small seepage of oil somewhere on the lower front of my starboard engine. It’s not much right now (never had to add oil) but I suspect it will get worse over time. Anyway, is there any chance this is anything than the front main seal? If so what else could it be? If not, is this seal replaceable without dropping the oil pan? If so, what is the process? Any advice on next steps while the boat is on the hard? TIA Jeff the line on…
3 RepliesNovember 19, 2017 at 11:29 am Front seal leak is rather uncommon as far as I am aware. It is done thru the front cover, the pan stays put. Hmm, if pics are difficult access may be an issue. Need to pull the crank pulley at a minimum. Those who are fluent at doing this can do with the timing cover in place, otherwise all gets stripped from the front of the engine and the timing cover gets removed. I would be 100% as to identifying the source before tearing into it. Is y…
