One other thing I will mention…after checking all the pullys and alternator pulleys I have a slight bit of end play in the alternator shaft, I am assuming this is normal bearing end play. I am still going to replace tensioner.

Tony, The belt is 3 years old, 600 engine hours, total hours on motors 1300. Yes all pulleys are running free. I did notice that when idling the belt “slaps” at the crank pulley. Slaps mean it goes slack and tight or vibrates. I have a video of it. I can attach if possible. or send it directly to your email?

I totally agree with all of the comments above. I had a 480ce motor problem due to over propping a couple of years ago, 25k worth. I took out 2″ of pitch which got it down to the 450 specs or very close to it(within tenths gph). Since then I have always had an un easy feeling of “when is the other motor going to break”? I just ordered my revised head from Cummins and have scheduled the replacement for this spring. I think the 5/6k now is better then 25k+ down the road. We are planning on doing the Great Loop this year leaving from 1000 islands in upstate NY and headed down the middle of the country, cross the Gulf to Keywest then back up the east coast(ICW), the last thing I need is to have a motor problem. I am looking at the repair as insurance!

Oh yes, new o-rings and Plenty of ALCO Metalube! I purchased the lube from seaboard, It oozed out when I tightened the caps. The picture was after I removed the covers, squeaky clean compared to others I have seen.

Well after searching through my freshwater side of my motor and cleaning out pieces of impeller with not resolution I went back and changed the “NEW” thermostats I put in 2 weeks ago and it fixed my problem. I found the new thermo have failed (see picture notice split ). The motors run perfect now, temps are steady, unlike before(up & down). I look at this whole exercise as a huge learning event as I really know how the water flows through the engine, I got to service my aftercooler(per Tony, see picture). It was incredibly clean, I am assuming due to our fresh great Lakes water. Cummins was top notch and credited me for the failed thermo.

Yes it was the first run after winter layup. I store my boat in heated storage, the fuel tanks were 95% full, and diesel stabilizer was put in them. re-Commissioning consisted of changing oil and filters, but did not change fuel filters. The filters have approximately 3000+ gal of fuel run through them. As I said ran fine at low speed, only when I power up the starboard motor will not go past 13k or 14k and there is whitish smoke. Even in neutral. BUT there were 2 times during my trip when it did power up. Go figure
