This topic has 5 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byKraig Kilger 1 year ago

October 2, 2022 at 1:07 pm Here are the basics.Ā  Would very much appreciate thoughts regarding potential source of the issue and actions (if any) to be taken.Ā  Thank you. QSC 540 with 2660 hrs.Ā Ā  Elevated aluminum in oil sample a year ago (25ppm).Ā  80 hrs on oil.Ā  Oil changed after sample taken. Elevated aluminum this year in oil sample (29ppm).Ā  60 hrs on oil.Ā  Report attached. Ā As shown in attached report, aluminum in prior years was nil All other readings appear norma…

October 7, 2022 at 4:46 pm I removed the condensation drains on both AC’s.Ā  These are the check valve versions that close with a few lbs of pressure.Ā  The drain on the engine with the offending oil sample was clogged and the AC was holding a small amount of fresh water (it has been a few weeks since I ran the boat and I presume there was more water at shut down).Ā  The drain on the other AC worked fine.Ā  I suspect that the AC has been holding water after each run for…

    • Onan Generator – low oil pressure fault (bad sensor?)

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byKraig Kilger 1 year ago

July 31, 2022 at 4:12 pm I have an Onan MDKBM 11.5 KW.Ā  It is well maintained with approx. 1800 total hours and has been without issue until this weekend when it shut down twice, each time after running for a couple hours.Ā  On each occasion the unit provided a diagnostic “two blink” light which indicates low oil pressure.Ā  The oil level is at the top line on the dip stick, and the oil and filter were changed 8 months ago with approx. 50 hours on the unit sin…

August 9, 2022 at 9:29 am Thank you.Ā  Sourcing a new sensor was easy and inexpensive so I swapped it out.Ā  Ran it a couple of times for about 30 minutes each with the new sensor and seems fine but will be on the boat for 3 days/nights this weekend so will find out for sure whether the sensor was the issue.Ā  Given that when it shut down with the low oil pressure fault it had been running for well over an hour to me suggests that oil pressure is fine.Ā  Of course, if the is…

    • QSC 540 – 449 fault/alarm code

This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byKraig Kilger 3 years ago

August 28, 2020 at 11:40 am I received a 449 fault code/alarm yesterday at cruise (fuel pressure very high) on one of my engines. The engine runs fine at lower RPMs, but when I ran it up for a minute or so after the alarm to test it was burning substantially more fuel than the other engine and it sooted the transom (so there actually appears to be more fuel being injected into the system rather than a faulty reading). After being shut down for a few hours the fault code…

September 2, 2020 at 8:21 am Big shout out to Tony! I ordered the fuel control actuator on Monday and they had it at my front door yesterday afternoon. Just installed it and ran the boat and itā€™s back to running as God had intended. Thank you!

    • QSC Alternator – intermittent failure to charge

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 5 years ago

January 14, 2019 at 12:23 pm I have 2008 vintage QSCā€™s (24 volt) with approx. 2300 hours. Last year one of my alternators stopped charging. I had it removed and took it to a shop where they bench tested it and said it was working fine. I had it reinstalled without any work being done to it and it worked and has continued to do so until this weekend when I ran the boat and it was not charging. What might be the cause of this intermittent failure? I can have it rebuil…

January 19, 2019 at 7:01 pm It’s pretty obvious you must have “on engine, or, off engine” wiring issues based on what your have posted…………. Why not post some really good pictures showing your engine as installed in the boat–all angles, all perspectives so I can “see” what its living arrangement is.. Let me “see” battery connections. good pics of the back of the alternator, wiring on the back side of t…

    • Delo 400 SDE 15-40

October 28, 2018 at 7:57 am Any comments regarding this newer Delo formulation that appears to be intended to replace Delo 400 LE. Is this an acceptable, or perhaps preferred, choice for my QSC’s? I have been using Delo LE. Thank you.

October 28, 2018 at 3:51 pm Worry about everything that really matters on these type of engines—- 60++ HP per liter diesels with salt water cooled mixed metal aftercoolers, all of the cooling “hang-ons” made with light weight metal thin wall alloys, are so easy to overload above the recommended prop curves in the “cruise HP RPM” range and exhaust system designs that still play a major cause in early engine failures……………

    • Newly Installed Fresh Water Flush System

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byMike Mason 5 years ago

October 6, 2018 at 3:48 pm I just finished installing a fresh water flush system on my boat (with QSCā€™s). Since this topic seems to generate a fair amount of interest I thought Iā€™d post a few pics of my setup and describe the process I use in the event someone might find it to be useful. No magic here as this is similar to what some others have done, and it’s quick and simple. – I use my cockpit bait tank as a water reservoir and allow the engines to draw wa…

    • Propping Question – QSC 540s

This topic has 9 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated byMike Mason 5 years ago

July 15, 2018 at 6:21 pm Hi there. I am hoping to get a little help assessing my current propping arrangement and the extent of further required adjustments. My boat is a 2008 41 Riviera flybridge with QSC 540 HP motors (2600 rated rpm). This is my 3rd season with the boat. I have had the props off twice to be adjusted and will do so again after the season if and as needed. I am in SoCal and have used Wilmington Propeller for prior adjustment and balancing. Props …

October 9, 2018 at 8:02 pm Nobody better than Wilmington. You are right where you need to be. Adding cup would give you lift but then you need to reduce pitch. It’s give and take. Enjoy it how it is. I have been down this road chasing a ghost. Our burn rate is slightly off port vs starboard as well.
