QSM11 635 Overhaul
This topic has 14 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
November 19, 2018 at 11:01 am I’m looking at a Novatec 55 with 15 year old QSM11s. The boat is great but as far as I can ascertain, the engines have had none of the recommended preventive seawater side component maintenance that I know is important after learning about on this Forum and BD (and doing) everything I possibly could on the Cummins 6Cs I had on my previous boat. The turbos and lower half of the aftercoolers are pretty toasty. (see attached photos). I see no…
14 RepliesDecember 5, 2018 at 10:47 pm No problem ………….Actually I have to respect the older 72’s–It was a solid engine engine as long as you watched over all the hang-ons closely and could afford the parts.. Tony

Exhaust Elbow Doomed?
This topic has 9 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
June 22, 2018 at 9:24 pm I’ve posted this question before about different boats/engines but this is another and I’m still not sure what to look for exactly. 1998 Jefferson 48. Volvo 72P-A motors. 430 HP. The raw water entrance to the elbow is high but sort of slopes down. Still doomed to fail? Also, anybody know what the P-A refers to on these engines? There is no throttle cable attached to the fuel pump lever arm so I presume there is an electronic control…
9 RepliesJuly 9, 2018 at 6:14 pm That sounds pretty reasonable. Certainly better than the jacketed doomed to fail ones that cost about $4500 from Cummins the last time I checked. Thanks again for all the good advice.

Wet Exhaust Doomed to Fail?

February 23, 2018 at 7:16 pm I’ve been contemplating a 2007 Novatec 55 with QSM 11s. Could someone comment if this wet exhaust arrangement one of the doomed to fail designs?

Fuel Solenoid Issue?
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 6 years ago
December 1, 2017 at 7:10 pm Weird problem just started on my 6CTA 8.3s in a Sea Ray 420 AC. Both engines start immediately for past 4 years. Neither engine would start yesterday. Turned over and fired but only ran for a second or so on multiple attempts even with increased throttle. Switched to new racor filters but no change. Primed vigorously with the thumb pump but no change. The fuel solenoids engage with the starters but snap closed (open?) when ignition switch releas…
5 RepliesFebruary 23, 2018 at 7:53 pm Well you were on the right track with your original post subject line, your fire shutdown was screwing with your fuel solenoids … nicely done and thanks for posting the resolution, it adds great value when threads are not left open-ended.

Engine Load Calculation
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 years ago
January 24, 2018 at 9:01 pm I have been trying to determine the fuel burn/loading on my Cummins 6CTA 450s and finally made a trip long enough at plane speed to get some data and make some calculations. I spent 9 hours at 2300 rpm which gave me 17 knots of speed over 143 nautical miles. At the end I refilled tanks with 244 gallons of diesel fuel. The Cummins Fuel Consumption- Prop Curve for my CPL 8089 engines suggests the fuel burn at 2300 rpm is 15.4 GPH per engine or 30.…
3 RepliesJanuary 28, 2018 at 8:20 pm My props are actually Michigan Hy Torq MY-T4, not the Dyna Quad I mentioned in the previous post. I’m not sure what difference that makes but they were recommended for a Sea Ray.

Advice re Fuel Lines
This topic has 8 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
December 30, 2016 at 1:45 pm I recently disconnected the fuel cooler plumbing on my 6CTAs and replaced with the SBmar raw water hose modification. For now the coolers are still in place with fuel lines attached just zip tied up out of the way. When I disconnect the fuel lines in and out of the cooling Ā pipe and connect them together to re-establish the flow path, what can I expect? 1) Will much fuel flow out of either line considering it is the return flow and engine is off…
8 RepliesJanuary 22, 2017 at 5:59 am Boy, don’t I know it. I have no idea what Sea Ray was thinking with this design. I’m a raw rookie at all this but have Ā discovered enough to know it’s better to do the work myself than find out the guy I paid only went half way because it was too uncomfortable. Thanks for the support.

Advice on Coolant for 6CTA 450 Mechanical
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
January 9, 2017 at 7:23 pm I’ve read a lot on boatdiesel.com about the need to put DCA into the coolant and monitor the levels regularly, making adjustments as needed. I was talking to one of the fellows at SBmar (not sure of a name) a month or so ago and the topic of DCA came up and he suggested plain green Prestone (ethylene glycol) was just fine for coolant in my engines. I know the last time a mechanic did the maintenance they used Prestone. So, who do I follow?…
2 RepliesJanuary 11, 2017 at 8:17 am Thanks so much for this advice Tony. I can just keep doing what I am already by the sounds of it. That was my gut instinct as well. Jerome

Cooler Maintenance
This topic has 7 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
November 10, 2016 at 7:28 pm I put this up on boatdiesel.com but thought I’d try here too. I had my coolers serviced with an ultrasound cleaning. I was surprised to discover that every lick of paint was removed right down to bright aluminum. Do I paint the inside of the cooler housing as well as the outside to provide some barrier to the seawater exposure? If so, any paint recommendation? Also there is some pitting on the cap/housing mating surface? I was planning on …
