August 24, 2017 at 6:08 pm Thought I had posted this but apparently not, so will try again. Need some discussion about Yanmar versus Cummins in the 270 to 330 hp range. I have had two boats with Yanmars , one boat with Cats,. And one boat with Volvo. The Yanmar support here is very poor. Small one man operation and the Cat and Volvo experience was expensive parts and in the case of riser for the old 3208NA, nearly impossible to get. So in my search for my next boat I have…

November 14, 2020 at 6:22 am Ray, There is a new Yanmar Dealer in Pensacola. Flat Island BoatWorks at the Pensacola shipyard has added Yanmar to their scope. The have added technicians and space to support. They have done extensive work on my 6LY2A-STP 440 HP engines and I am happy with them. Their Service Manager is very well versed on the Yanmars, along with Cummins, CAT, MAN and others.

    • SMX filters versus Racors

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRaymond Slingerland 5 years ago

April 19, 2019 at 5:53 pm New boat to us. 970 CPL, 300 hp engines with some updates. Changing all the filters etc. Noted Racor 900s had water in them. One 300 gal. Tank. One filler station. Don’t like messing with the Racors. Changed from them on previous boat with the SMX double doubles and squeeze bulb primers. Still have 4 of the 1000 filters and 3 of the 19513 filters. Is there a shelf life for them? Probably 4 years old stored in a humidity controlled room. …

April 21, 2019 at 10:05 am Tony, great reply, gives me more things to look at. I also like your double double filter system since I had them on my previous boat. But at age 85 the agreement with my son-in-law is “I’ll buy the next boat but you have to maintain it”, My mistake was not letting him work with the Racors this time and I think that would have sealed the deal. Still have three Racors left that came with the boat, and will let him do them next t…

    • Cummins 6bta oil pressure issue

March 11, 2019 at 4:51 pm 1986 Trojan International 10 meter express, Cummins 6bta 300hp, about 1992. CPL 970. Oil pressure gages read pressure by oil pressure not dc signal of some kind. No wire to it, just the tube. Starboard reading high about 80 at idle, before warm up and oil change. Swapped gauges. Then the other one read high, and the previous high gage read 60 which was consistent with previous pressure for the engine now hooked to it, so don’t believe it …

March 8, 2019 at 1:58 pm I just ordered two, but note the remark. do will not replace the Walker–Attached is picture of existing one on a 300 hp 6bta, vintage 1991. Don’t know if walker or not but length of filter material is 9 in and dia. is 7 inch. Believe the hose/opening to be 4 inch. Is your a 4 inch hole diameter and will it work? Also tried to find phone number to ask the question but when I click on ask question–came up a note, it was, I think…

    • A dirty after cooler???

October 4, 2018 at 5:16 am Boat with the 300 hp 6btas. Going to wide open throttle port moves up to 2700 max and the starboard lags behind it and only reaches about 2600. Clean bottom, but boat not used much over the last year. What comes to mind are over propped, reduced fuel supply from dirty filters, or as the man demonstrating the boat suggests, starboard engine after cooler needs cleaning. The man is in business as a diesel mechanic and has taken care of the boat f…

    • Yanmar 4cyl vs Yanmar 6cyl

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 6 years ago

April 5, 2018 at 11:18 am In general, for my search for a boat I have searched only for those with Cummins Engines. Parts are cheap and available, and mechanics are readily available to work on them. However, there are some boats that I might consider that come up with the Yanmar engines such as the 6LPAs and the 240HP 4 cyl. I have eliminated the 6 cyl from consideration for such things as Valve seal issues and more stringent maintenance requirements. But how about the…

April 7, 2018 at 10:10 am Bill, I’m on your side…………Cummins never produced an engine in this size that could come close the the overall quality of 4LHA…..IMO , 4BTA was sad attempt……To bad they Yanmar never made it in a Common Rail engine but instead wasted their $$ on the 6LY (that engine could never compete w/ the QSB) and those “BMW chainsaw diesels” that are already obsolete… I will mention the 3 yr o…

    • A Stamas 32 Sport Fisherman with a Cummins

This topic has 8 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRaymond Slingerland 6 years ago

March 3, 2018 at 8:19 pm I thought I posted this, but can’t find it. Looking for a boat with Cummins engines. The Stamas 32 Sportfisherman is the type of boat that would work well for us and I have found one with the 6lp yanmars in it, but I want Cummins. Does anyone have any knowledge that Cummins have ever been retrofitted into this boat or even it would fit. I believe the dimensions of the 6bta and the yanmar 6lp 315hp are similar but know the torque/rpm are di…

March 4, 2018 at 7:45 pm 3 or 4 inches difference shouldn’t be any problem in the Stamas 32 as I recall from crawling around in the engine room with the 454s. But I have to see pictures of the 6lp to see if the additional 3 to 4 inches for the Cummins would be a problem. Thanks for the drawings. A little easier to see than mine and I didn’t have a tx. on the Cummins. Also the height was another consideration.

September 13, 2017 at 7:37 am Engines are in a Bayliner 3870 which is a 1000 miles away and I am trying to decide if I want to make an offer, fly up there, sea trial and survey. Listed as 1988 250hp Cummins. Unfortunately the boat is 17,000 displacement dry and I want to run 20 knots. The Hino was the favorite engine for them up to 220hp, but with the 250 hp thought I might be able to run 20 knots. To do so however would probably have to run 2200 at least, and maybe up to 24…

August 22, 2017 at 8:44 am il analysis conundrum. Looking at a 1997 Bayliner 3788 with the 6bta 250 hp cummins. Owner has had for 4 years, showed receipts for 20,000 dollars worth of care. Among those are “complete mechanical service engines and transmissions, all fluids and filters changed, new impellers, valve adjust, injector service and REBUILT PORT TURBO. On survey and sea trial, engines started quickly, no smoke, 2700wot rpm, everything seemed normal. Oil ana…

    • 6BTA5.9-M2 clarification

August 14, 2017 at 6:59 pm 6BTA5.9-M2 clarification Need some clarification on use. The -M2 engine is listed at 249HP, but the first data sheet listed, May 1995 shows 300bhp at 2800 rpm, yet I thought it was a 2600rpm rated engine. The data sheet for 12 May 1999 now shows 250bhp at 2600 rpm. Both show CPL of 1613. What is this?? Next question. The engine is in a 1997 Bayliner, original install, so assume the May 1995 data sheet would apply. The notes indicate it can be op…
