I have two 6lya-stp yanmars to which I installed a flush out system to keep salt water build up to a minimum. It gives me a little peace of mine for a process that takes very little time, and hopefully I’ll get longer life out of some expensive coolers and exhaust elbows. I don’t think there can be an upside for salt water stagnation in my precious engines.
David: on my yanmars, if I’m away for a while I just drain out the remaining water at the oil cooler drain plug. I came up with a way of keeping the salt air moisture down in the engine room, and that is with oil pan heaters that I keep on 24/7, it keeps moisture away in the crankcase and reduces white smoke(unburned fuel), and as a plus works as a dehumidifier keeping air dryer around the engines and in the aftercooler (the aftercooler is more of an hopeful assumption). Seaboard Marine sales the heaters. By the way I’m going to give those magnesium sticks a try.
Thanks for starting the post on freshwater flushing, I tend to get a little flak from the heavy iron engine guys. Apparently Detroit Diesels are impenetrable to saltwater. Let your wallet do the talking I say.

Hi Bob
I forgot to add that the Aetna manual shows that you can add upper and lower tachs to the same magnetic pick up. You can go to their website and download all their installation instructions.

Hi Bob
I used the original flywheel pickup that came on the motor. It should be a direct connection unless the boat manufacturer bypass the pickup and wire off the alternator which your rpm could be off by a few hundred.

Hi Bob
Your flywheel has 127 teeth. I just installed a set of Aetna LCD techs and am very happy with there performance. I know they are a little pricey but quality and factory support is good. Hope this helps.
