December 15, 2022 at 5:43 am What is the coolant change recommendation on QSC 500’s with Fleetguard ES complete? This coolant was added 125 hours and three years ago. Owner has been told it needs to be changed because of time.Ā

    • Volvo Coolant

April 25, 2022 at 4:57 pm I recently went over to the dark side and purchased a 2009 boat with Volvo 600 IPS. I am looking for an alternative coolant to use in these engines and Volvo is very tight lipped on specs, their coolant is $32 per gallon. Does anyone have experience with these engines or have an opinion on the subject? I should mention that at this price it is not even available in the quantity I need.

May 25, 2022 at 5:33 am I have 07′ Volvo D6’s, I needed to top off one engine as we lost some coolant changing out the temp sender. My mechanic said that Prestone green is just fine to top it off with. He is an excellent Volvo mechanic, been to the school and has the software. I topped it off with a pint or so two summers ago and all good. I’m sure you will be fine with the Prestone you used.Ā

February 4, 2022 at 9:23 am I am posting this to hear the reactions to something a friend was told about the need for aftercooler service in Florida. He has a three year old Cummins QSC powered boat and was told by the local diesel guru (not a Cummins tech) that these new engines do not need the aftercoolers removed to clean the cores just acid flush the cooling system! Did I miss a memo on this?

    • Air Intake Temp

May 11, 2018 at 9:12 am I know air intake temp can indicate the condition of the after coolers. What values relative to sea temp are considered nominal on QSB/QSC engines? I have a friend with QSB’s that run 20 deg. over sea temp (100) while my QSC’s run 4-5 deg (86) over sea temp at cruise. Sea temp was low 80’s on the day we were cruising together. The QSB’s have issues with performance and are over propped also. Any thoughts on his after …

June 13, 2021 at 6:31 am Sorry I should have been more specific than just ā€œyes and yesā€. Yes, after coolers and heat exchanger were removed from the engine and serviced at the shop, not just some quick cleaning onsite.

June 1, 2020 at 10:51 am We have been having a discussion here in Florida on what to do if a boat owner goes up north for 3-4 months and their boat sits unused for that time period. The engines are QSC’s and flushed after every use. The local Marina has a “Boat Watch” which includes a monthly start up of the engines and idle at the dock. My feeling is you will never get 4.5 gallons of oil warm enough to do any good at idle and maybe do actual harm. Bet…

June 1, 2020 at 11:12 am I agree Dave, unless she’s taken out of the slip and a load is put on the engines to get them up to full operating temperature better off letting them sit. Be sure the seawater is 100% flushed out of the circuit with freshwater or even something like the non-tox winterizing antifreeze that has corrosion inhibitors even though the freeze protection is certainly not needed. And, of course, be sure the engine room air space humidity is regu…

    • New Aftercooler

This topic has 6 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byDave Carlson 4 years ago

February 25, 2020 at 6:58 am The attached photos are of a brand new aftercooler that was dismantled to grease per Seaboards proto call. I am assuming this is condensation from assembly at the factory. There was already some corrosion around the o-ring! This is a good example to show why Tony’s procedure should be followed even when the parts are new.

    • QSC Vibration Damper

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byLuke Nelson 4 years ago

February 25, 2020 at 6:45 am I would like an opinion on this wobble of this QSC 500 vibration damper. I have removed it and can find nothing wrong with the mounting. Is there a test for these dampers? I did not notice a vibration in this engine specifically but the boat has a vibration between 1200-1900 rpms that a prop scan did not correct. I do not want to throw $400 at something that might be normal.

    • Aftercooler Sealing

February 6, 2020 at 5:36 pm To those of you here that service aftercoolers, if the aluminum housing is pitted is it proper to use some other sealer besides grease? I have QSC engines which requires $3700 per aftercooler to replace and would like to dodge that bullet. I did add some pictures although they are not the best.

February 10, 2020 at 2:32 am What I did on my aftercoolers for my 5.9qsb’s was I wire brushed the putting holes, filled the pits with 2 part marine epoxy filler, sanded the surface smooth, sprayed a light coat of epoxy primer and enamel paint and the sealing surface was restored. There’s also a body filler called “Allmetal” that is an aluminum base that you could use but it’s harder to sand. Good luck

January 25, 2020 at 8:34 am Looking into a possible engine mount change on QSCs. Is the center stud removable, especially on the new blue mounts sold here or does the engine need to go high enough to clear as is? Thanks

April 4, 2019 at 1:22 pm I have a boat that had a pre-sale engine survey done and one engine’s crankcase pressure reading was 12 inches of water. This was done with a system similar to Tony’s diagram on this site. This is a strong running engine that does not burn oil or smoke with under 700hrs. Is this reading to be considered bad? We are waiting for oil sample results and are checking the air sep with no problems found yet. Thanks Dave

    • QSC Oil Leak

This topic has 6 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 5 years ago

December 6, 2018 at 5:26 pm I have an oil leak on a QSC 500 where the drain hose from the air sep attaches to the oil pan. This looks to me like an oil drain fitting that was adapted for a hose but before I remove the fitting and reseal I wanted to make sure there is not a nut inside the pan. Thanks to all and love the site!

May 24, 2018 at 12:22 pm I am looking for info on depth transducer installation on a smartcraft diesel view with QSC 500’s. The transducer I received from Mercury is for older 8.3 engines with a flat 4 pin connector that is labeled to connect to the diagnostic port. The QSC has a round port. There is a transducer connector on the Medusa harness which does not work even if connected to 12V. Does anyone have any opinions on how or even if this can be done? These are…

    • Smartcraft fuel guage hookup

March 20, 2018 at 7:28 am I have a new to me Tiara with Ver 1.0 Diesel Views and 500QSC engines (2006). The fuel management was not hooked up to the vessel views from the factory and I am seeking info on how to do this if it is even possible. I have not been able to find much online about this subject.

December 29, 2017 at 6:48 am I have a new to me Tiara with 500 HO QSC engines No’s 46543630,46545376. The engine tag says governed to 2500 RPM which is contrary to the prop curve I have seen on this site. At full throttle the engines reach 2560 which should be good according to the tag. The fuel burn is off but from what I can tell these engines need a different curve. The boat runs very well with 25 knots at 2100 RPM. Any thoughts or has anyone seen this as the rat…
