January 31, 2024 at 6:15 pm Hello all – 2007 660HP Reman QSM11’s in a 1984 46′ Viking convertible. Purchased boat in 2016 with 450 hours and now have 1,350. Not sure when the last time the coolers were serviced, possibly never. I know that isn’t good at all. Money is tight, so I am attempting to do this myself, and as an amateur, I am fairly intimidated. I am planning to service the aftercooler, heat exchanger, and gear and fuel coolers. I don’…

February 1, 2024 at 5:37 pm I made a little progress tonight. First realized there is no way that fresh water line is coming out without removing the air intake so that’s out. Second I got the end caps off the upper and lower housings of the Aftercooler. I looked in with a flashlight and was pleasantly surprised with what I can see so far. I also looked into the H/E and while it’s gummed up with barnacles, it probably also looks a little better than expected. T…

November 25, 2023 at 4:02 pm Just received my SMX Pyro EGT kit from SBMR. I want to install them on my QSM 11’s, but I am not seeing where the port is to install on the exhaust? Do you need to unwrap the heat shield to install? Thanks Rob

November 26, 2023 at 4:41 pm I assumed it was a standard thing with this engine but I am beginning to understand these exhaust systems vary from boat to boat. Thank You.

    • QSM11 Oil Fill Cap

This topic has 7 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 2 years ago

December 20, 2021 at 6:11 pm Was offshore a few day ago in fairly rough conditions. Noticed the Oil PSI in my Port engine was fluctuating abnormally. Shut it down and checked the dipstick to find I was at least 2 gallons short and had significant oil in my bilge. No leak on the inboard side so I made my way to the outboard side and immediately saw that the Oil fill cap on that side was on the floor and oil had blown all over. I assumed it wasn’t tight and came off due…

    • Kohler Generator stalled and won’t start

July 19, 2021 at 7:06 pm Kohler 15.5EOZ, 2005 with 1,350 hours cut off on me while offshore the other day. Could not get it to restart, It cranks strong but will not catch. I’m assuming something with fuel. I changed the primary Racor (which looked fine) and the secondary engine spin on just to be sure. That didn’t help. I cracked one of the injectors on the engine and cranked – no fuel came out. I worked my way backwards from there and found a line fr…

July 31, 2021 at 5:18 pm Had changed the filter in the Racor, but got some advice to take it apart. Found this lovely little algae snake in where the ball check valve is. All good now,

    • Kohler Generator won’t start

August 27, 2020 at 1:42 pm 2005 Kohler 15.5 EOZ Generator with 1,568 hours. Out of the blue, generator will not start. No prior indication of an issue. When I press either the remote start or the one on the generator itself I get a fast banging noise from the starter. Checked the battery and it’s fine with voltage and a load test. Figured it was the starter so I removed that and brought it to a mechanic shop. They tested it and said it was fine. Put it back on after…

    • Sherwood Impeller – cannot get new impeller in

This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated byfirehoser75 3 years ago

August 20, 2020 at 5:01 pm Looking for some help. Not the first time changing impellers, but first time on this boat and QSM 11ā€™s. Sherwood pumps with 18000 impeller. No issue getting the old one out, which was in perfect condition. Had already bought the new ones as a proactive maintenance issue, so tried to install it. I greased the first 2-3 inches in the pump itself and twisted the new impeller in. Itā€™s in a bad spot and leverage is very hard to exert. I got the new i…

September 14, 2020 at 9:18 am Mathew, I am having a bit of a problem picturing what you are describing. Is the PVC pipe the same diameter (outside diameter) as the pump opening, larger or smaller? Does the PVC get pushed into the pump body in any way (kind of like the tool Richard describes)? How does the inside diameter of the PVC compare to the diameter of the impeller as it comes out of it’s packaging? Did you use a dowel that is close to the diameter of the impelle…

    • Overpropped QSM11’s

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byFireisland1 4 years ago

April 13, 2020 at 3:39 pm Looking through the QSM11 information on here, I am pretty well overpropped. I am in the 20GPH range at 1800-1850 RPM’s depending on weight I am carrying. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a Prop shop that has experience with this specific issue, preferably in the NY/NJ area. If not, I guess I could ship them somewhere. I have dealt with S&S in NY and Atlantis in NJ in the past. Boat is a 1984 46′ Viking. The QSM’s are…

    • Cummins Gauge Backlight issue

This topic has 7 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRobert Connolly 6 years ago

July 2, 2017 at 8:58 am I have Cummins Electronic engine gauges for my QSM11’s. The Stbd gauge has no backlight at night. The Port is fine. I used the manual to adjust it, but it shows it’s on highest power light. Is there a bulb in there somewhere that might need to be replaced? If so should I screw the gauge out from the front, or try to reach up behind it under the console? Thanks and Happy 4th of July! Rob
