October 2, 2023 at 10:27 am I have hydraulic steering setup to a Konrad sterndrive.Ā  Last month I had a hose crack while out in the ocean and had to manually manipulate the sterndrive to get home. I got the hoses replaced and proceeded to bleed the system.Ā  I have a Seafirst Variable helm pump and am not getting even turns lock to lock.Ā  Turning to port I get 7 turns to lock and turning to starboard I get 4 turns lock to lock.Ā  Is there something I am missing or can anyone…

October 3, 2023 at 9:21 am Tony, I believe it was about 7 turns.Ā  I don’t recall if the turns lock to lock were the same. The helm pump is about 10 years old.Ā  Never had a problem. I have an unbalanced cylinder for the sterndrive if that matters. If the difference in lock to lock is not an issue then I’ll keep fishing. Thanks again for your assistance.   Ron

June 19, 2023 at 10:11 am During a fishing tournament this weekend I developed a fuel leak.Ā  The hose from the lift pump to the fuel filter was leaking.Ā  It had a 1/4 inch spilt about 2 inch away from the lift pump.Ā  I made a temporary repair to get back in.Ā  I had about 25 gallons of diesel in the bilge by the time I finally got in.Ā  The hose was Trident A1-15 1/2 inch. I am just wondering if there is anything I should be on the lookout for or just change the hose and c…

March 20, 2023 at 4:29 pm This past weekend I found out my heat exchanger was leaking from the end cap gasket.Ā  Saltwater was spraying on the engine.Ā  I took the end cap off and noticed the 2 surfaces were smooth.Ā  New gaskets on order.Ā  What is the best way to clean and protect the engine surface where the water was spraying.Ā  This is for a 6BTA 370hp engine.   Thanks Ron

December 8, 2019 at 2:41 pm I picked up some rubbish on my intake while leaving the harbor. Alarm sounded and temp was 220. I shut it down and then let it cool before starting up and put it just in gear back to harbor. Less than 1/4 mile. Temp got up to about 210 back to harbor. Changed impeller and cleaned up pieces downstream of that. Looks like I got all the pieces What else should I check to make sure engine is ok? Thanks Ron

March 11, 2017 at 1:22 pm I use the Seaboard Double Double system for my fuel filtration. Ā My vacuum gauges are reading about 2″-3″ mm HG. Still in the green zone. A friend who is a powerplant generator operator said the filters need to be changed out every 2 years regardless of the reading because the paper elements break down. Ā I have never heard that. Ā Is that something to be concerned with or should the vacuum gauge be the determining factor. Thanks in ad…

December 7, 2019 at 6:30 am On a Cummins electronic engine ( can’t speak for others as I do not know there “fuel system”), max fuel flow occurs only under load, plus on an average, total fuel flow is measurably less with the common rail engines. As a comparison– Max fuel flow with any QSB 5.9 is about 50 GPH at full engine load/RPM Max Fuel flow with a 6BTA 5.9 370 is about 73 GPH and occurs at approx 1800- 2000 RPM in neutral or under load. April 18, 2018 at 10:42 am I ordered some new hoses from Seaboard to change out old ones while I was performing maintenance on the aftercooler and heat exchanger. All the hoses are good except I am having trouble getting the 0.75″ expansion tank coolant hose (item #10 from website) on the lower fitting. It fits the top fitting fine. I’v tried dishsoap and also heating the hose with hot water but cannot get it more than maybe a 1/4″ on. Are there any ti…

April 19, 2018 at 10:10 am Rob, That’s the right one. I finally got it with a heat gun. I called Seaboard and Brandon said that is a 7/8″ fitting from the factory. Ron

December 10, 2017 at 7:14 pm I have 2 group 31 batteries wired to an on/off switch used to start the 6bta 370 hp in my boat. I got the boat that way. I donā€™t turn the engine off when fishing. What I would like to do is have a separate house bank and starting bank. What would be the best way to setup a starting bank and also a house bank so I can turn the engine off while fishing and still use electronic deep drop reels and lights without having to be worried about starti…

    • Valve Cover Bolt Gasket

This topic has 4 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byPaul Greenhalgh 6 years ago

September 26, 2017 at 4:28 pm I have a 6BTA 370 hp. I am going to check the valves and I currently have the o-ring gasket for the valve cover bolt. Our local cummins shop says that it has been upgraded to the Isolator type gasket. The bolt looks like the one shown on SBMARs site for the Isolator gasket (bolt with partial threads and shoulder). Is there any difference between the 2 gaskets? Thanks in advance.

September 29, 2017 at 3:54 pm I haven’t heard of the ‘isolator bolt’ option before. Is this considered a worthwhile upgrade for 6BTA’s? Does it really make a difference to noise?…or have other benefits?
