1.) The Republic of Vietnam. When a friendly unit came in contact with a large enemy force, Warrant Officer Athens immediately flew the Brigade Commander and his command group to the area of the battle. Upon arrival over the area of contact, Warrant Officer Athens’ helicopter began receiving deadly enemy anti-aircraft fire. Ignoring the lethal barrage, Warrant Officer Athens fearlessly flew a series of low level passes, enabling the enemy positions to be marked for the gunships. When ordered to land, Warrant Officer Athens, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself as he landed his aircraft in the bullet swept area. When the command group had gotten off the helicopter, Warrant Officer Athens maneuvered his aircraft airborne but still remained in the contact area, even though he was receiving deadly hostile fire. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Warrant Officer Athens’ bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
