My SMX water pump is leaking… I’m seeing a stream of green corrosion coming from the weep holes. Am I to assume the pump needs to be rebuilt? If so, are there instructions somewhere on how to do this with the rebuild kit sold here?

That would be fantastic – I’ll pull it off as soon as I can (get back to the boat). Thank you!

SMX Pump rebuild
Send us the pump–We’ll go thru it top to bottom for $200 + shipping back to you….Not a money making thing, ( that would not be fair) just covering some raw cost….Just a 2-3 day turn abound.. Put a note with it..

Pump rebuild
Mike from my experience rebuilding different pumps it’s something only an owner would do to save money if you can do it yourself.no mechanic would do it because it’s so time consuming and they wouldn’t want the liability .it does usually require some special tools to make it easier but can be done otherwise.if it was a winter project I’d do it.but if I was in season I’d replace it..Bill
January 28, 2019 at 9:59 am #55570I’ll have to hunt down the name of the PO. But, I’m almost certain these are SMX pumps… they look absolutely identical, and the PO also replaced the aftercoolers with yours as well.
Is a pump worth rebuilding? I thought for $300 (rebuild kit) I’d give it a shot, but with no instructions I’d have to send it somewhere… and the labor would eat up any benefit of having it rebuilt vs. buying a new replacement.

Just an FYI……………..There are now 100’s of copies of my pump in the field..
Got the name of the past vessel owner that owned the boat?

January 23, 2019 at 9:12 am #55057What is the total history of the pump as to your use, past use, etc etc..?
How is access as to service or removal?
How āhands-onā are you?
What exact engine?
Post a good picture of the pump as installedā Not too close upāneed to see all the plumbing attached to it.
Last time you changed an impeller?
Start with that.. 6 things to get started..

The history of the pump is hard to say. I’ve had the boat for two years (it’s a 2006) and the pumps were obviously replaced at some point since they’re SMX pumps. The boat has 1100 hours (I’ve put on 300). The pumps look otherwise very clean, not that that means anything.
Access is great, port side of starboard engine.
I’m fairly good hands-on… I’ve replaced car engines myself, water pumps, done valve jobs (on this Cummins), rebuilt carburetors, etc.
It’s a Cummins 330 Diamond 6BTA
I can’t get a picture for a couple of weeks as the boat is a few hours away.
I changed the impeller 9 months ago.
