I have a cumin’s 6 BTA 5.9lt rebuilt . On the start up we get white smoke 5 to 6 minutes then it gets less but then we get rainbow on top of the water on tick over and low rpm in gear. We still get white smoke when the engine is warm as well and under load we get grey smoke. The engine temp is all good and also the oil temp . (I’ve attached a video ) (Any help is really appreciated)

hi tony
no not double washers the head had been board out to take 9 mm nozzles when they was in it was putting fuel out on top of the water, so i changed it i put adapter washers in to go from 9 mm back to my old 7 mm nozzles and it seems to have worked. no more fuel on the water all runs clear.June 2, 2018 at 12:25 pm #33024

Are you saying you basically had double washers? Yes, that would do it..
Also, in case run at the dock no load to warm up–Very bad, especially are a fresh engine –get the boat in gear ASAP{ and under some load to warm up in the 700-1200 RPM range..
Buy some 250W oil pan heaters

My experience with three new Recon 6BTA 370s setup the “Seaboard way” ?
All three engines, beginning with hour one of running time, produce a light “fuel sheen” on the raw water exhaust flow. Doesn’t matter whether the engines are hot after a long cruise rpm run or stone cold.
Nothing abnormal with a light fuel sheen on the raw water flow IMO.
One last fact…all the ReCon 6BTA 370s I’ve owned, (CPL 2008)the “pre heat air induction heater circuits removed”.
Great motors !

problem solved now it was the injector nozzles i put adapter washers in and put back 7 mm nozzles, just smokes for 5 mins at start up now then all clear, and no rainbow on water at all,and just steam at load. so as you said it was most like were the problem was spot on so thanks for your input.
Andy.May 26, 2018 at 10:46 am #32789we use her for lots low power work it became fumy i do not know why there was blow by,breathing a lot even up dip stick tube all i know is when head was removed there was slack in the pistons was told this would cause lots of the problems. and boars had scoring on them all.
when i first bought as a 220 hp the engine we did 4000 hours, then after rebuild now told 260 hp ?. its done 12 hours is all.
the 9 mm im not sure on that myself i’m guided by the mechanic ??. i think there putting in more fuel as if you stand at back of boat the smoke stings your eyes and strong smell. not sure of the long term of the engine as just bought as a recon to replace a old ford that blew.
injectors they used Bosch 0433171358 set for 260 bar the original injectors was 0433171431 think they was also Bosch.
sorry did not follow up your post was to late as he already changed the injectors just been trying to sort it but no joy on that.1 user thanked author for this post.

Need to get Cory to move it over..
For our poster:
1) Why was the engine rebuilt? There is always a reason as they never just about never “ware out”….
Blow by?? WHY??
Total hours since new? If rebuild before, hours since then?
[/size]2) That was totally stupid to bore out to 9MM–That was a very bad call–Probably where the issue is
3) What is the long term history of the motor ??
4) CURIOUS ——————–Why did you not follow this post of mine?
Got all the pics you send and looked the engine over really close. Should be a CPL 2205–Use this as a serial number for parts.. 45806470.
Injectors??—- what parts number did you buy ? Or if rebuilt, what spec did they use?
I show an injector # as 3802818 or 3897596PX

Didn’t we do this already? You should always continue on a prior related thread so we are not asking questions and looking for info that was already covered.

May 25, 2018 at 11:06 pm #32780was going to replace engine but decided to have it rebuilt instead as we had lots back pressure big loss in power burning lot oil etc and had run her for good few years.
all parts genuine Cummins , engine board plus.5,pistons .5 mm oversize, new turbo, lube oil pump, fresh water pump, new injector nozzles as old ones found to be faulty mechanic board holes from 7 mm to 9 mm as new nozzles only came in 9 mm so i was told. P 7100 pump rebuilt as delivery valves was broken .(power now back after pump redone)CPL number for rebuild is 2956. serial i got from you as we had no number originally number for parts etc is 45806470. hours from rebuild is 12 hours only. to me after rebuild sounds louder on tick over, when under load is fine and have good power back soon as you give her full load we get grey smoke from exhaust not steam. only thing we now have is white smoke on start up but go after bit, fair bit of oil or fuel on water from our exhaust.May 25, 2018 at 2:31 pm #32771

White & Grey smoke after rebuild
You are leaving way too much out to even attempt to give you any type decent answer.
1) Why was the engine rebuilt? There is always a reason and it if just about never from being “wore out”….Total hours since new? If rebuild before, hours since then?
2) What constitutes a rebuild as to main parts replaced? Make a list of them
3) Genuine Cummins parts?
4) Engine serial number and / or CPL?
5) Post good pics of the engine as installed in the vessel.
