Hello all. New to forum but have been learning from it for a long time. Hope to someday meet Tony and the crew at SB. I am looking at a boat equipped with a single 6bta (inboard), with a fresh water cooled “tombstone” style aftercooler and a lucas cav injector pump. The cpl tag is missing, I’m told the engine was used in a freshwater irrigation pump (farming) application.

I have read up on the 250 hp 6bta but the datasheets I have seen indicate an inline injection pump and not the rotary lucas cav that is on this engine.

    My questions are:

Are there datasheets out there for this configuration and is it 250hp or ?

Max no load rpm of engine?

What should the max rpm be underway?

I’m a novice on marine diesel but know the 6b pretty well. If I understand correctly the max rpm underway should reach a stated amount and if it doesn’t it could possibly be overpropped leading to early failure.

Seller has a gun to double check tach on console and it appears tach on console is about 60 fewer rpm than gun.

I can provide more details if wanted but didn’t want to clutter up post with a bunch of unneeded words.

    Thanks for any replies.

After seeing these pics are we still thinking CPL 953? How much HP on 953?

Fuel consumption similar to 220 6bt with rotary or 250 6bta with bosch?

    Gracias.

Ok sounds like rpm is pretty close.

Need pointers on updating weak cooling system. First Iā€™ve heard of this. Is this a very expensive proposition?

Will get better numbers and pictures of injector pump soon.

Cannot express how much I appreciate the guidance.

Definitely looks like a CPL953 from about 1989/1990… How about a real good pic of the injection pump ( side and top)..

A properly set up CPL953 will make over 2800 RPM no load, and needs to see 2700-2750 for propping purposes.. Don’t lug them down.

Best to upgrade a very weak coolant system that came on this engine.. $$ well spent especially on a “planning hull” that needs to operate above 2100 RPM to stay on a solid step..

We got a max no load of approximately 2750 rpm.

And max underway of approximately 2650-2700.

Not sure if pump was derated for irrigation pump use or why no load is so low. Engine seems loafing underway and not at all hurting to my untrained ears.

    Have any pictures to share?

    The cpl tag is missing
    Likely a CPL 953

Are there datasheets out there for this configuration and is it 250hp or ?
    Not to my knowledge

Max no load rpm of engine?
    2,900-2,950

What should the max rpm be underway?
    2,750

Iā€™m a novice on marine diesel but know the 6b pretty well. If I understand correctly the max rpm underway should reach a stated amount and if it doesnā€™t it could possibly be overpropped leading to early failure.
    Basically, yes

Seller has a gun to double check tach on console and it appears tach on console is about 60 fewer rpm than gun.
That’s good as it would avoid the issue of it being overpropped but not knowing it..
