I am about 4 hours from home and Starboard dropped rom to 1800 rpm and won’t exceed it. Started getting some black smoke.

Installed envirovent system at beginning of this year. Engine room is clean, air filters were clean and red. Starboard has turned solid black, collapsed in on itself and oil catch bottle is sucked in. Engine is starving. How can this happen? What is going on, next steps?

No expert here but to me—

Sounds like an exhaust leak, the cause of the blackening of the filter. THat would turn the filter black plugging it completely. That soot will also clog your aftercooler if allowed, it may have already started.

Find the exhaust leak, change the filter. If you can’t repair or find the leak now then make sure you get a bunch of spare filters and monitor them. You say you are 4 hrs from home, then change it every hour or even more. Just be aware that the aftercooler may need cleaning once home and you must locate that leak as surely it will get worse. It will also make a big mess in the E.R.

Most likely close to the stbd. turbo of course depending upon the exhaust system design.

Sorry, just realized the original date., way too late.

Post pics of all.. Something going on in the engine room clogged your air cleaner.. Remove it, but check for what caused it to clog.. Like Phil said–Water spraying or ??

Sounds like something caused your air filter to collapse – either it was too dirty, got wet (could you have a hose leak spraying water?), or just plain ole failed and it collapsed in on itself. When that happens the engine starves for air thus the black smoke AND the suction on the envirovent goes way up thus the collapsed bottle. The issue is not the envirovent.

    Time for new air filters.

Might have to remove the collapsed air filter and run home with no air filter if none are available.

Post up a good picture of the collapsed air filter and of the entire engine.
