As a word of caution to all who are servicing your heat exchangers, the housings have been dipped in some black coating. I would think this is an attempt to help stop corrosion between the dissimilar metals (Brass and Aluminum) and may very well help. The caution here is after you pull the cores out, do not be abusive in cleaning your housing, do not dip in acid bath, do not pressure wash, steam clean, inside or out, you will knock off this protective coating, now into little flakes that will forever be inside your cooling system. I would suggest no more than just rinsing out with fresh water. I would also use caution when pulling the core out to as to not scratch the coating off inside housing. I do not know if this is only on new Cummins motors, what models, but it is on my Cummins QSC 8.3 series.

I believe you are talking about after coolers, while I’m talking about heat exchangers, my after coolers do not have this coating inside, just straight aluminum housing.

P.S. starting to get everybody around here to use that meta lube you suggest when putting their after coolers back together .

Just an FYI…………….Cummins calls the coating an “E-COATING” and still shows up on some aftercoolers to this day.. The latest ( the last 2-3 yrs or so) QSC aftercoolers do not come with it……Why they stopped? No clue.. Why the B’s & C’s & QSL9’s still have it, no clue…..It looks good though!……..

IMO, it does nothing good or bad, and the flakes would not cause any damage in the big scheme of things..
