What is the closest ZF Transmission model to a 1999 ZF Marine model IRM280PL transmission? I am interested in what posted tips and suggestions would be applicable. In particular, the comments about measuring the transmission oil level. My transmission OM states to measure the transmission oil level when the engine is running and in neutral and idle speed. Once the dipstick is removed, oil spurts out aggressively from the opening. I think the instructions are a translation error. When I try to measure it with the engine off, the level is not indicated (even if engine was just run in neutral, then turned off). My strategy to date has been to be very careful when changing the transmission oil yearly and to put exactly the correct amount of new oil back. The oil after a typical year of use (~170 hours) looks as clean as the day it was put in. All oil pressures were checked last year and all were within specification.

    ZF280 PL ??

    Luke,

ZF changed their Gear ID nomenclature about 10 years ago.. Your Model numbed is now called a ZF 280-1. There are also some physical internal & external changes, but if something did happened to yours, the change out is easy..

As to oil–A quality SAE HD 30 W meets the spec. Some 15W-40 also meet the spec.

Oil level & checking–The manual is quite confusing on and if you ask an employee at ZF, you will not get a solid answer– For 100% sure, you cannot get a good reading trying the check it with the engine running, regardless of what may be written about that.

Take this to the bank.. Measure the oil level within a 1-3 minutes after shutting down–Oil in the middle of the marks is 100% good.. Dip stick pushed in.. Remember, MORE is not betterā€”IMO, Running on the low mark is better that running on the high mark and it lessens the chance of oil foaming.

Checking & Changing the Oil on your ZF Marine Transmission

If you are have great rattle issues that have worsened over the years, you may need a new torsional coupling.. Also, using this oil can also help mitigate that– ā€œ MobilFluid 424ā€.

I find with my 286’s about 1/2 inch above full with the engine off is close as well.

    ZF280.

Are you pushing the dipstick down fully into the case/housing?
