Ferretti 53, 2001, 2 x CAT 3196, 66HP, 2000hrs- We bought the boat March 2015 and had a lot of servicing done. Turbos were overhauled, exhaust was corroded and exchanged and may other things. After that engines were running great but:

Blowby… we have oil spilling out from filling cap and dipstick and a few other small drips from cylinder block… see pics…

An engineer told us it might result from an incorrect pulling of the injectors to check them… He says they sit in copper cups and cannot be pulled without destroying the copper cups and special tools. We now need to take off the cylinder heads and replace the copper cups to get rid of the blowby. He thinks it has nothing to do with pistons or rings  as no or little oil used and no black smoke.

We will check the crankcase breather this weekend for clogging.

Any other idea ? Can the damaged injector cups causing the crankcase overpressure ?

The CCV  “Crankcase Vent”.. I Want a real good picture of it mounted on the engine –I need to “SEE” all the plumbing to and from it.

I also want to “SEE” the air cleaner..

Then I’ll tell you what to do as to making it both work PROPERLY and also figure your “Blow-By” situation..

By “Breather can” you mean the Engine crankcase breather as on picture attached or the CCV ( Closed Crankcase Ventilation ) ?

    Hi Dave! Thanks so much!

I will be back at the boat next week and will try to get very good pictures. How do I find out how much oil is in the oil pan? The dipstick shows just a bit below the high mark… Spec of Oil pan is : Engine crankcase standard sump refill is 28 liters or 30 quarts…

    THANKS!

    Peter,

It’s simply amazing just how bad mechanics can be, and I don’t even know this engine that well.. But 100% for sure your mechanic is full of caca.. It IS NOT the injectors as if it was leaking where they seat on the copper tubes, combustion gases would only leak into the fuel system and the engine would run like crap. He is right about if you pull them you have to recut the seats, so DON’T PULL THEM.

Your issue may or may not be excessive blow-by.. I suspect you do not and that what ever blow-by you have can be mitigated.

    1) I want to see your “breather can” & all the plumbing to it-I need very good pictures
    2) I want to see your air cleaner assembly (Walker AirSep)—all of it—I need very good pictures
    3) Get the engine 100% clean of all the drip & splatter
    4) Cap off the oil drain pump tube or put a valve after or before it, or both.
    5) I want to know the exact spec of the OIL PAN as to its capacity—Just the OIL PAN
    6) I want to exactly know much oil is inside the OIL PAN RIGHT NOW—Just the OIL PAN

Let’s start with that—In the meantime, DO NOT pull the injectors..
