    Hi.

I have a set of 6CTAs, CPL 1929, and I’m trying to figure out where the throttle lever should be at idle. The seller started and ran the engines for me when I bought them, and I didn’t personally operate the throttles. The only diesel boat I’ve owned had Detroits, but that knowledge base doesn’t carry over to Cummins engines very well. The pictures below show the injector pump and then a close-up of either an idle stop screw or WOT stop screw. The throttle lever spring pulls the lever away from that stop, so I’m guessing its a WOT stop and would appreciate confirmation.

My other question has to do with crankcase ventilation. I believe my engines are 420hp and appear to be from 1996. They don’t look anything like what’s in Tony’s Tip articles, most of which focus on the B series. In the attached pic, you can see that what appears to be the OEM CCV next to the intake, behind and to the left of the aftercooler. I assume there’s a steel wool-type filter medium inside the housing, and there’s a place to attach a hose…but I have no idea where that hose might have attached to. Is the Envirovent compatible with this CCV? It looks like newer 8.3 liter engines pull fumes from the top of the valve cover.

Thx in advance for any advice or comments.

Looks like a typical 6CTA 8.3 with the Nippon Denso EP9 fuel system and “upside down” seawater pump..

Very stock–Throttle lever forward to the stop screw is WOT..

NO idle stop screw in the normal sense–It’s on the back of the pump

A small article on this under Tony’s Tips

Crankcase breather–the missing hose normally just went to the bilge.. Not a bad system but could be improved easily
