In Tony’s post about the raw water pump and removal / service nightmare there is mention of “upgrading to a better pump” where the removal and servicing is not so tedious…. Anyone know what pumps are easier to remove and service?

Attached is the mess that is on my port motor with a leaking raw water pump with signs of prolonged leaking…. Second photo is starboard motor’s pump and fuel cooler set up. Fuel hose need attention this winter as well.

    Always appreciate insight and tips!

    Thanks! Grant

It just takes time and a few bad words directed at Cummins and the builder–But you will prevail. ..

You’ll figure out what will work best for you.

Cummins designed the R&R of the seawater pump with their head in the sand.. It also looks like your boat builder amplified the issue by making access to it on the port engine next to impossible.. Sad, but you are not alone.

    TRICKS for down the road:

    1) well over 90% of the boats out there DO NOT need a fuel cooler– There is an article on this web site.. Not having it makes it much easier.

    2) Adding a 1/2″ spacer behind the engine bracket on that side makes it much easier to work with.. Not all boats have that option due to isolator/vessel bracket or pad design.. Kits and pics on this web site

    3) Our SMX 1730 is a vast improvement over the factory Sherwood 1730 and is also easier to R&R due to the design of the front flange

    4) There are pics on this site of other things you can do to clean up that side of the engine for way easier servicing.. In so many words, there is a lot of “things” there that do nothing other than make the engine more complex.

But, still you are in for a painful experience at least the 1st time– And from what I can see, that looks way over due…..
