Can anyone share an opinion on exactly how far gone these aftercoolers appear to be. The motors are 2002 6bta 370s with 600 hrs each on them in saltwater. They push a 32 topaz owned by an older gentleman who wasnt big on maintenance. To me it looks like they have never been serviced. Maintenance records show just aftercooler zinc replacement. Owner suggested “they dont have enough hours on them” to need aftercoolers clean. I have read the articles on aftercooler on this site and understand the proper service procedures and schedules. The motors run good just worried they may be taking on some water. Any thoughts?

This is a pre-purchase inquiry? With that extended period of neglect they may even show signs of failure at the exteriors in the form of heavy corrosion or cracking of the housing, usually at the upper and lower areas where the end surfaces of the housing mate to the caps. That would prove to the seller he is dead wrong. Tell him you will pay to have them bench serviced and if they are servicable and pass pressure test all is good, if not his dime replaces them.

Until you remove the aftercoolers from the engine, put them on the bench and remove the cores, no one can answer your question……………………… Experience would suggest that you are years past typical “Marine Age” limits and well into borrowed time..

At this point, you really should not even think about using your engines anymore without dealing with this..
