25 Terry Jason down east lobster boat:

Project Oct 2013 through June 2016. #1 goal among many was a 22-23 knot cruise conditions permitting without beating on the engine ! Tony Athens engineered powertrain:

Cummins 6BTA 370…..ZF63A 1.54:1 gear…..1.75″ shaft….5″ exhaust…..20X20 DQX prop…..engine “propped loaded for bear” @ 3250 WOT. SMX Aqualarm, 180F Temp switch on custom Seaboard exhaust system (for loss of raw water flow), SMX high flow SS 160F Tstat, 195F temp switch on the exhaust manifold (buys some time to save the engine in case of a fluke overheat).

Rehab and repower of 1989 25 Terry Jason lobster boat can be seen here:

#1 Goal met. Boat cruises @ 22-23 knots @ 2600 rpm with an EGT of 700F….The 370 is overly under propped as planned. Very please with the results.

The 370 in this lobster boat is the 3rd 6BTA 370 from Seaboard.

Finally point…consider a 160F SMX tstat and ALARM your engine to the teeth !

    Merry Christmas,

    Bill D

Great stuff, awesome boat, thanks for posting Bill.  I could not agree more with your above statement.  My first season with my B’s I had custom Borel panels made up and I put together a real nice alarm system with a total of 5 switches per engine (engine oil psi, gear oil psi, coolant temp x2, and exhaust mixer temp).  After reading all about your “BBQ’d 370’s” I wasted no time on that project.

Those Borel panels are LOUD.  I also have bilge alarms on Borel panels and one day out cruising my buddy was crawling around the bilges giving things a good check-over and he test tripped a bilge alarm float switch…I think my reaction time on pulling back the throttles was equal to that of an NHRA drag racing full tree .000 !

And then the second season I did the SMX 160’s.

The gain in “relaxation” at the helm is super!!
