Let me first say I didn’t realize Tony was not participating with Boat Diesel……I posted this question there, Tony did answer an email I sent him, thought we had my issue solved by replacing thermostat. But it is not…..

The temps are very erratic, took the bottom hose of the after cooler and found about 60% of an impeller(see pic 40% left, where??) my marina changed, they are jiffy lube mechanics, they never flushed out the pieces, I also found the top zinc in the after cooler was missing, maybe stuck in oil cooler? The bottom zinc was in perfect condition. After cleaning out the pieces of impeller, took the boat out and same issue, 180..? .then 170, 175, then 168 for a couple of miles. At no load it runs at 160ish. I am going to clean out the gear cooler this weekend, not sure how anything could get there, but I have to cover all my bases. I also have purchased a new sending unit form Cummins Northeast in Syracuse and will install it. I am also going to order after cooler kit from Seaboard, what kit do I need, #3 Kit 6CTA & QSL Seawater Side After cooler & Heat Exchanger Maintenance Kit ? Any additional advice? By the way I am in fresh water.

….. The picture was after I removed the covers, squeaky clean compared to others I have seen.

    NICE!

Oh yes, new o-rings and Plenty of ALCO Metalube! I purchased the lube from seaboard, It oozed out when I tightened the caps. The picture was after I removed the covers, squeaky clean compared to others I have seen.

    Hi Mike,

I figured you did….but looking at the picture it shows no grease……did ya grease up the after cooler bundles, orings and caps with plenty of grease ?

Glad you found the base issue———————Hopefully you pulled the cores, cleaned the air side ( most important) and reassembled per my protocol.. If not, a major fubar..

Yes, YET another BIG PLUS for “fresh water flushing” of seawater designed components

    FIXED Overheating Problem

Well after searching through my freshwater side of my motor and cleaning out pieces of impeller with not resolution I went back and changed the “NEW” thermostats I put in 2 weeks ago and it fixed my problem. I found the new thermo have failed (see picture notice split ). The motors run perfect now, temps are steady, unlike before(up & down). I look at this whole exercise as a huge learning event as I really know how the water flows through the engine, I got to service my aftercooler(per Tony, see picture). It was incredibly clean, I am assuming due to our fresh great Lakes water. Cummins was top notch and credited me for the failed thermo.

Look at these pictures..This is the what bottom of your aftercooler will look like..

It needs to come off and be properly serviced ON THE BENCH !
