Turbo has been sticking periodically but will finally kick in was hoping to get through the season before replacing. Last time out was running at 2050 rpms and engine lost rpms and stopped. Seemed like it was starved for fuel, changed primary filter. It started right up but shortly after cut out around 1200 rpms.
Had to limp back to the dock at idle speed unless it would stop at higher rpms. Do you think it’s the turbo charger causing the problem or something else?

    Here are some pictures:
As you can see, the turbo charger needs to be replaced flange bolts really rusted and will probably have to be cut off. The other problem will be trying to get it out because there is no room to pull it back the only direction it can go is up. I doubt the turbo has anything to do as to why it is shutting down at higher rpms after running fine for over an hour.
Any help on the shut down problem on what to check is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Rick,

You have at lease two separate issues going on.

    1) Turbo sticking–99% for sure you are feeding you engine salt water due to a poor exhaust design.. This is not related to your engine shutting down.

    2) Engine shutting down–You are running out of fuel some some reason.

Your engine data tag info is attached just is case you were not really sure what you have.

Yes, post lots of good pictures..

    Hi Phil,

    Engine has 1554 hours serial # 44825914
Oil and filters changed every year, heat exchanger cleaned out and new thermostat done in 2015. Last year has some water in the Racor fuel water separator, drained but plug didn’t get tightened all the way, fuel leaked out and engine stalled. Had to bleed whole system. This year it has been running fine until last weekend.

The turbo has been sticking this year, had to spray some lube and turn it by hand to free it up occasionally after it has sit for a week. Needs to be replaced but hoped to get through the season before doing so.
When it cut out it seemed like it was starved for fuel, would loose rpms and then quickly shut down. Waited a few minutes, pumped manual low pressure pump and it starts up. If I went much over idle speed it would run a few minutes then shut down.

I’ll take some pictures this weekend and post.
    Thanks for the help.
    Rick

    Rick –

Hard to tell much with the limited information you have provided.

    How about:
    1- engine hours and serial/CPL
    2- maintenance history, ownership history
3- you state you were going to change turbo- why?
4- how about some good pictures of your engine from all sides with good focus and definition

    Phil
