Looking at buying a 42′ 23,000lb boat with twin 1990 3208TAs. Total hours 2550. WOT of 2650 and 2700 and oil pressure of 39 and 49 psi. Water temp 190 and 180 degrees. Modified V, planing hull.

For this engine given the above, what should mechanic who does engine survey look for?

    Thanks,

    Otter 36

    Joe,

If you are really serious about what to “look for”, then here is simple list .

    1) Remove the “shower risers” from both turbos and lets see inside of the turbo exhaust outlet.. What you have is a wet riser system that is 100% “doomed to failure”, and IMO, is already probably leaking internally.

    2) Ask yourself why the fresh paint? Anytime I see that, I am skeptical.

    3) Ask for records as to when the salt water cooler aftercooler & Heat exchangers were removed from the engines and professionally serviced in a shop.

    4) Same thing for the gear cooler and seawater pumps..

You asked, so this is what you need to “look for”………….

Is that a interesting exhaust mixer come muffler idea on the 2nd last pic?

That is a “shower can” mixer… most are prone to fail internally.

First thing I will say off the top is that those are 2800 RPM engines and if you can only see the RPMs mentioned above at wide open throttle (WOT)… the engines are not reaching the governor like they should ~2900++ RPM. Something is NOT right… either too much prop for the boat or the engines have been beat up badly and are not able to reach full performance.

    Pictures of the 3208TAs

Not particularly good photos. Engines were repainted recently.

Thanks for any advice you can provide as to what to look for.
