November 7, 2022 at 8:33 pm I have to say I’m impressed…..new to us 1999 Albin express trawler with twin 6BTA engines. Previous owner installed these heaters on the sides of the oil pans….access to the bottoms would be nearly impossible. We’re supposed to get some freezing weather this week so I turned them on Sunday…..went down today (monday) to check on them. Used an infrared thermometer and the coolest part of the engines were 65 degrees…..obviously warmer the lower I w…

    • Oil Pan Heating Pad Burning Though?

November 6, 2022 at 2:42 pm Hi Everyone – I am now just about to install my third oil pan heater on my starboard engine. Zero clue why but it keeps frying. The first two looked similar when I peeled them off. Has anyone else experienced this? My port pan heater has been running with no problems and is plugged into the same outlet as starboard. Attached are pictures.   The bottom of my pans are clear of paint, but now it looks like some of the adhesive (yellow pa…

November 16, 2022 at 11:44 pm Had a good talk this afternoon with engineer at Philip and Temro. I then went to the boat to apply some of my new knowledge. Turns out the multi outlet extension cord running from my 110 outlet to the Block heaters had a intermittently Bad socket driving me crazy. So both heaters are up and running. We also discussed the other heater that I could never get to adhere to the oil pan I so carefully prepared. I did get The replacement heater I purch…

    • Build a lift muffler

October 24, 2022 at 11:26 pm I’ve got a big in-line wet muffler, about 12” diameter and easily 36” long, 5” in and out.  My take on it is that it’s so roomy inside that it does little to reduce sound level. I’m wondering about the feasibility of converting it to a lift muffler in hopes of making the exhaust quieter, adding a starboard side exhaust for North Sea style outlets.  <br />What I don’t know is if there are certain specifications that I need to follow in buil…

November 7, 2022 at 5:08 pm Please excuse my ignorance of terminology, is 3”x 3 or 3.5” mean that the exit tube is 3 or 3.5” off the bottom of the muffler?     Also, I notice that all the commercial lift mufflers are quite short (vertically) , would making it taller make it quieter?  I found this drawing online that is just  what I want to replicate.

October 25, 2022 at 8:15 pm Is there a preferred location to install a wolverine heater pad on a B series, Meaning the rear or the front of the pan or does it not really matter?

October 27, 2022 at 5:21 am As to the original question, as long as it’s on the bottom of the pan on a completely flat area that is all that matters, remember its for long continuous use so the entire pan gets heater and radiates upward.. Scroll down on the below page. Installation requires a coarsely scratched, clean and dry surface.https://www.sbmar.com/product/wolverine-oil-pan-heater-model-25/

October 7, 2022 at 4:46 pm I removed the condensation drains on both AC’s.  These are the check valve versions that close with a few lbs of pressure.  The drain on the engine with the offending oil sample was clogged and the AC was holding a small amount of fresh water (it has been a few weeks since I ran the boat and I presume there was more water at shut down).  The drain on the other AC worked fine.  I suspect that the AC has been holding water after each run for…

However as soon as you try to crank the engine the failing battery will cause that average to drop big time.   I have…

June 20, 2022 at 8:23 am We have a QSL9 and in addition to the standard alternator, we have a 300 amp Balmar alternator that charges our large house bank.  It has a custom bracket near the front of the engine and uses a dual V belt setup from a crank mounted pulley. We would like to change it to serpentine as we have had constant trouble with getting two v belts (matched), hence one slips and smokes. Seems like the pulley for the alternator is easy to source, the crank …

August 7, 2022 at 9:15 am I’m servicing my two ZF-80A transmissions with new Seaboard coolers/hoses/filters and want to replace my rusted steel hydraulic fittings on the top of the transmission.  Can I use Stainless hydraulic fittings or should I stick with Steel?  The ZF casting is aluminum so I don’t want to induce any corrosion.  Sbmar sells stainless fittings but they don’t specifically say for transmission use.  Just wanted your take.. September 27, 2022 at 5:31 pm Generally unless the metals, in your case steel or SS in contact with an aluminum casting should not suffer any corrosion   UNLESS the parts are being wetted with salt water.    That may produce some corrosion but it will be slow to develop.   I suggest you cover the stuffing boxes with an old ,small fender  you can cut to produce a cover.   THe cover will stop the spray from the spinning shaft from being flung around and travelling which w…

September 14, 2022 at 8:02 pm A general question about the warranty, if any, you get if you hire a Cummins/Onan Location to repair your Cummins engine or Onan generator?  Apparently there are two types of Cummins affiliates: Cummins dealers (which can be a boat dealer or independent repair shop) and genuine Cummins Locations where all they work on are Cummins/Onan products and work either at their location or provide field service to larger boats. September 16, 2022 at 6:57 am Thanks Tony, If I was selling my boat and one of the after survey conditions was me getting a fairly minor (about $2k) repair done on a 20 year old Onan. If this repair is done by a Cummins Factory Distributor there would be some kind of parts and labor warranty. Is this warranty transferable to the buyer? If not, it would be better to give the money to the buyer and have him do it…if he would agree to this.

August 6, 2022 at 11:30 pm Can I find out the size of the barb on the coolant overflow reservoir bottle. I think it is for 6mm hose size, that is 1/4 inch hose. one can fit 5/16 inch hose  ( 8mm) firmly but it has a wafer leak. The header tank size is larger so a different size is needed on each end. Any suggestions. Thanks
