Losing antifreeze while running
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 23, 2022 at 5:01 am Starbord engine Cummins 6BTA which has been fully rebuild, new block, head, internals, exhaust manifold ect now when i have test run it for short durations basically couple hours i lose all antifreeze. There are no visible hose leaks or antifreeze in engine room. What is the possible issue Head gasket ?????Ā turbo leak by???? any ideas tony to help trouble shoot. The coolant system pressure test is 100% fine at cold.Ā
2 RepliesMarch 23, 2022 at 6:59 pm Head gasket, cracked manifold, turbo gasket are initial suspects, IMO. Ā Ā Ā
Id do the coolant pressure test again, on a hot motor. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Is the engine running well? Ā Injector break test done?Ā
It must have overheated radically if it ran clear out of coolant!

QSC Heat Exchanger Core Removal

February 6, 2022 at 7:00 pm I have the end caps off the heat exchanger and was wondering if the core needs to be removed in one direction? Is the core typically service off engine like the aftercooler with the same Seaboard protocols regarding Alco Metalube, etc.? I looked through the forums but didn’t find a lot of info on the QSC HE servicing. Thanks.
8 RepliesMarch 23, 2022 at 6:21 pm My HE core looked like your picture with the divider on the end cap and the bronze strip on the core. Here are these parts just prior to putting the end cap back on.

QSB 5.9 Maintenance Question
This topic has 13 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
July 11, 2017 at 6:59 am Tony and others… Last fall we purchased a 2011 Grand Banks 41EU with Cummins QSB 5.9 425HP engines and Zeus pods. After bringing her home 2,300 trouble-free miles from Holland Michigan we needed to do some service. On a subsequent trip we had one minor issue that required a call to Cummins of Jacksonville. Their tech came to the boat and fixed the small issue, but I did take advantage of the time we had together to ask his input on an upco…
13 RepliesMarch 23, 2022 at 1:43 pm Darryl, I believe we are now the owners of your 41EU. We are chasing a steering actuator / trim leak now. I left you a message and would love to pick your memory. Small world!Ā

March 17, 2022 at 10:27 am A year and a half ago I posted about having some issues with my instrumentation (WIF alarm, hourmeters not progressing) and mentioned I was planning to move to a Chetco SeaGauge but I purchased the replacement panel from SBMAR and got the WIF turned off. I just got around to installing it and I have it working with my N2K network with Raymarine Axioms and i70s (see attached pic). I have the stock harness with this helpful wiring diagram from thi…

March 16, 2022 at 10:21 pm Hi guys thanks for the great site. Iām a relatively new boat owner. Last summer we purchased a 1995 Albin 28 TE, itās got a Cummins 6bta 250 horsepower. Iāve got a long list of maintenance items and upgrades. I wanted to know if Kirkland diesel oil met the Cummins requirements? I was unable to tell by looking at the box. Are all coolant pumps created equal
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 14, 2022 at 8:44 am Noticed a tiny leak from the coolant pump on the port side. Figure I might as well go ahead and change both of them. They seem to be available here for $245, but they are running between $70 and $100 most everywhere else, including Amazon with delivery tomorrow. If the part on this site said SMX, then I would assume it came with some upgrades to help performance/longevity, but it does not say SMX. What am I missing?
3 RepliesMarch 14, 2022 at 7:11 pm Thanx for the quick response. Certainly, don’t want to be 60 miles offshore with substandard parts.

Fuel filter for 5.9 6BTA
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 9, 2022 at 9:16 pm For marine applications is an FS1280 fuel filter (with drain) preferred over the FF5285 (without drain)?
3 RepliesMarch 14, 2022 at 5:04 pm Basically, you have a single Racor 500 FG before your engine They are in parallel, not in series. Dual just means if one clogs, you can switch over.. Adequate in a marine environment with an engine that circulates 1 GPM of fuel??’ Not even close in my 30+’s years of experience.Ā Maybe for your generator?.Ā My thoughts on fuel filtration is documented all over this web site and others..Ā

March 14, 2022 at 12:23 pm I just purchased a 38 Mediterranean with twin Cummins 6BTA 5.9 motors. When in gear and at idle the motors both seem to shake and vibrate. Just off idle (750 rpm) the boat/motors immediately become smooth. The idle is 650 rpm. (unfortunately 750 rpm will put me a 6 knts, too fast for my marina’s no wake zone)
I have a few questions. Is that typical? Oil drain hose location 6cta
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 13, 2022 at 8:37 pm Just went to change the oil for the first time on my new to me boat with a 6cta and i used the drain hose and pumped it out as i did on my old boat with the same engine but only got about 2.5-3 gallons of oil out. My old boat with the same engine would pull close to 5 gallons out. So i started to poke around and i noticed that the drain hose is plumbed into the drain plug thatās located in the side of the oil pan. Which sits about 2ā higher than…
1 ReplyMarch 14, 2022 at 5:18 am See attached for drain pan plugs. I have same issue.Ā When I’m done draining the bulk via the hose I put a container under the front plug and let another quart drain out while I’m doing other stuff..

February 17, 2022 at 6:18 am We removed the aftercoolers from our 6bta 370’s last weekend, in the process, had to cut a few hoses due to them being past service life, as well as in a couple places, too hard to access to remove whole. When I reference the hose info on the store page, I am finding conflicting info. It appears the raw water hoses on our engines are 1.5″ early model size, however the motors both have straightĀ (no s bend) fuel coolers like the late …

March 11, 2022 at 6:31 am Iām working in installing my Enviro vent kits today, A concern I had was the valve cover style kit coming in contact with the engine cover. Ā CanI move the front valve cover to the rear valve cover and the kit still function properly, or does the fill have to be the highest point. Ā With the angle of the engines, the rear valve cover will give me plenty of room.
