QSC8.3 600 HO low oil pressure
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
September 27, 2023 at 1:27 pm Having a low oil pressure warning at operating temperature. Found broken spring on bypass valve in the cooler. Performed the recommended replacemen valve without the spring (fixed position). Also replaced the pressure requlator. Same problem then replaced the cooler housing and ultasonic cleaned the cooler core. Replaced remote hoses, bypassed oil filter head, removed and replaced the oil pump. Several Oil samples have been taken during the ongo…

ECM Recalibration and Hunting
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
August 20, 2023 at 12:05 pm Everyone, I recently did the ECM recalibration on my 480CEās and it definitely improved my idle quality and throttle response. After doing the ECM upgrades I experienced RPM hunting on both engines so I did the fuel rack friction adjustment. The Port motor responded perfectly to this but the SB motor still hunts when cold but settles down when warmed up. Iāve tried to fine-tune the adjustment and I think Iām in the āsweet spotā since any adjustm…
3 RepliesSeptember 30, 2023 at 12:54 pm Update: The SB motor went back to hunting again until warmed up. Iām lost as to why and not sure how to correct it. As Iāve posted Iāve adjusted the friction screw both ways and while it solves the issue temporarily, the next time I run the motors cold it hunts again. If I understood the mechanics of the adjustment I could possibly make an informed adjustment vs. just trial and error. Does anyone know what the adjustment physically does or what …

Turbo/Manifold Coolant Leak
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
September 19, 2023 at 12:19 pm Last year, had a new turbo installed on a 330 6BTA.Ā The guy who did it used black RTV instead of red.Ā Had a small leak last year that was fixed by tightening the nuts after a few hours of running.Ā Ā This summer, the leak has come back.Ā Very small leak but it seems to be coming from the same area (turbo/manifold seal).Ā Coolant pools in the little depression on the engine block directly beneath the manifold/turbo connection.Ā Nuts are all tigh…
4 RepliesSeptember 29, 2023 at 2:06 pm To followup on the leak issue.Ā When inspecting all nuts again, I found three nuts tight.Ā I then had to disassemble the raw water pipe running under the turbo/manifold bracket to get a good purchase on the “hard to reach” nut and got about a quarter turn on it with good leverage.Ā Leak stopped.Ā I’ll wait until the winter and likely to a full disassembly and fix.Ā

QSB 5.9 Operating Temp 210Ā°
This topic has 10 replies, has 9 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
September 11, 2023 at 12:55 pm A guy I know has a 39 SeaRay with QSB 5.9 380 motors. Ā At speeds above 18 knots he gets an overheat alarm. Ā Engines are at 210Ā° at 18 knots cruise speed (verified with laser therm). Ā His mechanic tells him 210Ā° is normal for that motor and he thinks the overheat alarm is due to a bad sender. Ā The local Cummins dealer says trucks are running that motor at 210Ā° all day long. Ā Is an operating temp of 210Ā° normal for this motor? Ā 210Ā° seems high to…
10 RepliesSeptember 27, 2023 at 7:23 am He is crazy. I had that same boat, if itĀ is a Sundancer, and after servicing everything, as mentioned by Steve, I ran that boat at 25-26 mph all day long and never saw temps above 180. I bet his EGT is off the charts.

C-series coolant system maintenance item
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
September 26, 2023 at 12:00 pm While replacing the thermostats on one of my 1996 6CTAs, I decided to pull the hoses that attach to the top of the expansion tank. They connect to the top of the turbo, the exhaust manifold, and two points near the top of the engine. I believe these lines allow air to burp out of the system. Good thing I pulled them, because two of the four fittings were 100% plugged with rust. An 1/8″ drill cleared the blockages. I blew all of the hoses a…
1 ReplySeptember 26, 2023 at 5:10 pm Thanks for this post.. Yes, I have seen this many timesĀ , what I call “spitters” that vent air ( actually built up molecules of combustion gases/particles/rust)Ā from the coolant system to the expansion tank over time.. It’s from a basic lack for following coolant maintenanceĀ every few years.. Glad you wentĀ to the trouble to sort it out.

6BTA harmonic balancer bolts loosening
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
September 25, 2023 at 8:11 am Hello! The harmonic balancer bolts ofĀ the 6BTA (CPL 1975) enginen keeps loosening after beingĀ tightened to the specified toque in the manual. This is happening in 3 different engines (same CPL). I think that the harmonic balancers are… out of balance and the vibration is loosenig the bolts, what do you think?
2 RepliesSeptember 26, 2023 at 10:12 am Hello Tony, The obvious bet may be the mechanic, but it was supervised personally by me, and thightened to 96 lbs. Nothing out of the ordinary, all cleaned an lubed, everything original, including the pulleys. I noticed that the belt tensioner on the engine with the loose bolts jumps a litle more than the one that did not lossened the bolts but nothing extreme.

5.9 BTA low power issue
This topic has 6 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
September 18, 2023 at 10:29 pm I am trying to diagnose a low power issue. Its a 30 foot fishing boat with twin 5.9 bta’s. It was running perfectly after a rebuild or if anything port engine was little stronger after being rebuilt. But now its cant get over 2400 RPM at WOT. There is no smoke of any kind coming out the exhaust. Trying to figure it out I have taken some data readings with pressure gauges and hand held tach. Confirmed throttle lever is moving all the way to…

Light White Smoke Diagnosis
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
September 15, 2023 at 11:11 am I have twin BTA 5.9 engines and the starboard side is still having an issue with white smoke. In an effort to diagnose I have: Inspected the turbos Cleaned/serviced the aftercooler New air filter Installed a rebreather kit from Seaboard Verify oil level is not high Question: What are my next steps in resolving this issue? *Note: I am seeing more soot in the exhaust discharge water of the right engine that has the smoke issue
1 ReplySeptember 25, 2023 at 8:32 am The white smoke is at the dock at idle? cold? or at running speeds hot? On that list you may add a valve clearance check/adjust if itĀ“s too long since the last one.

Aftercooler Diagnostic

September 24, 2023 at 7:05 pm Is it possible to determine if a 5 yr old aftercooler has leaked raw water into the combustion side?Ā
2 RepliesSeptember 25, 2023 at 6:08 am Pressure test it like this before you pull it apart if you are concerned with it’s current state.Ā And then when you pull it apart look for salt deposits on the air side and a localized heavy corrosion area on the housing inner wall.Ā Here’s pics of a neglected intercooler from a 6LP.

August 10, 2023 at 8:58 am QSM11’s with Glendenning EC’s. At start-upĀ Starboard engine normal idle @600 RPM’S. Port engine RPM”s outa control, sounded like it was at WOT. Shut it down, checked throttle positions at both stations. Cranked engine again, same result. Rebooted engine power and EC controls, individually disconnected bridge and tower controls. Each start-up same results. No more tries after that. Any ideas….Ā Thanks, Tom B

QSM11 HX60 turbo outlet sealing
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
August 30, 2023 at 3:46 pm My turbo housing has some corrosion at the outlet but still useable. I want to seal it with something that will minimize leakage at the riser connection. It connects with the v-band and I don’t suspect a lot of leakage but less is more here. See attached pics of exh. turbo and Deangelo riser. I will be sandblasting the flange area to clean it up. I will also need to id the source of the corrosion. I recently got the boat, a Sea Ray 480 MY …

August 29, 2023 at 7:42 am My Cummins is tethered to a Smart Craft VesselView 1.5 display unit.Ā I’ve recently noticed the engine hours displayed on this unit does not accurately log when the engine is running – it sometimes doesn’t increment properly and sometimes it has even backed up several hours.Ā I believe this is related to using the remote start button at my upper helm but this is just a guess.Ā Any one know how to determine actual engine hours a…

August 27, 2023 at 9:33 pm Greetings… new guy here. Looks to be a great resource. My situation is that I have an assumed oil pan failure on my Onan MDKAW mounted in a Nordic Tug 42. September 17, 2023 at 1:27 pm Good morning, Port side oil pressure is about 12 @ 15% more than starboard. 3.40 vs 3.04 This has 2800 rpm https://photos.app.goo.gl/K4is4tuW14sYTQTc8 Should I control something? Tks lotĀ JohnĀ

SMX super 27 impeller compatable with Sherwood
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
August 28, 2023 at 7:06 am Hi. I have just replaced my failed Sherwood seawater pump with the SMX QSB pump. Are my spare Sherwood 2700K impellers compatible with the new SMX QSB? I see theĀ Super 27 is compatable (and better quality) with all Cummins QSB (assuming Sherwood) seawater pumps but being cautious I just wanted to check the reverse compatability so that I don’t throw out / give away my existing spares. September 11, 2023 at 8:28 am Iāve got a pair of 6BTAās each with SMX Double Double fuel filters plus the stock on engine fuel filter. Iāve had the system for about 6 years. I happened to read an article about fuel systems having too much pressure drop. The Cummins specs for my engines refer to a max dirty pressure drop of 4āhg. That seems very low.
